Dogs on the patio, and the rules behind it

California law lets restaurants welcome dogs in outdoor dining areas, if the owner wants to. Your dog must be on a leash or in a carrier, stay off the seats and benches, and get to the patio without walking through the restaurant. Food and water for dogs has to come in disposable containers (AB 1965). It is the restaurant's call, so a place that took dogs last year may say no this year. If you are not sure, call ahead.

With mild weather most of the year, LA patios stay busy in every season. On hot summer afternoons, pick a shaded table and check the pavement before your dog lies down.
