Eating out with a dog in New York

Since 2015, New York State law has let restaurants welcome dogs in their outdoor dining areas, if the owner chooses to. The dog has to be on a leash or in a carrier and must stay off chairs and tables. That is why most dog-friendly spots in the city are about the patio or the sidewalk tables.

Inside is different. Most places that serve food keep dogs out, apart from service animals. The exceptions on our list are mostly bars and breweries. See the full list of restaurants and bars and use the filter to find the places where dogs can come inside.

Coffee with your dog

For a coffee on the morning walk, see our dog-friendly cafés and coffee shops. A few of them are built for dogs, like Boris & Horton in the East Village, where dogs can be off leash in a separate dining room. Many others keep treats or pup cups for dogs.

Parks, dog runs and leash rules

Our list of NYC dog runs has 100 fenced runs and dog parks, with size, rules and the cafés nearby.

In New York City parks, dogs must be on a leash during the day. Many parks allow dogs off leash early in the morning and late at night in set areas. In Central Park that is 6 to 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and dogs must be leashed from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Central Park Conservancy). Some lawns and landscapes are always off limits, so follow the signs.
