How dog runs work in New York City

A dog run is a fenced area in a park where dogs can play off leash. Most are run by NYC Parks and are open during park hours. Hudson River Park, Battery Park City, Brooklyn Bridge Park and a few state and private parks have their own runs with their own rules and hours (NYC Parks).

Outside dog runs, dogs in city parks must be on a leash no longer than six feet. Carry proof of your dog's license and rabies vaccination, pick up after your dog, and keep it out of playgrounds, ball fields, fountains and pools.

Runs for small dogs

These dog runs have a separate area for small dogs: Washington Square Park Dog Run, Soundview Park Dog Run, Chelsea Waterside Dog Park, Carl Schurz Park Dog Run, DeWitt Clinton Park Dog Run, Cooper Park Dog Run, West Thames Street Dog Run, Tribeca Dog Park (Pier 26), and Gansevoort Peninsula Dog Park. At Gansevoort Peninsula in Hudson River Park, the small-dog area is for dogs under 23 pounds.

Water play in summer

Hudson River Park's dog parks have spray jets, fountains or a dog pool, usually turned on from mid-April to early November: Chelsea Waterside Dog Park, Tribeca Dog Park (Pier 26), Gansevoort Peninsula Dog Park, Pier 84 Dog Park, and Leroy Street Dog Park.

Off-leash hours in NYC parks

Besides the fenced runs, many parks have designated off-leash areas. There, dogs can be off leash from the time the park opens until 9 a.m. and from 9 p.m. until it closes (NYC Parks). Some examples:

The rules can change to protect wildlife, so follow the signs in each park.

Beaches

Dogs are not allowed on New York City beaches in summer. From October 2 to the Friday before Memorial Day, dogs may go on the sand at all city beaches as a courtesy (NYC Parks).

After the run, find a dog-friendly café or a restaurant with a dog-friendly patio.
