Dogs on the patio, and the rules behind it

New York State law lets restaurants welcome dogs in outdoor dining areas, if the owner wants to. Your dog must be on a leash or in a carrier and stay off the seats and tables. It is the restaurant's call, so a place that took dogs last summer may say no this year. If you are not sure, call ahead.

Many of the patios on our list are covered and heated in winter, which is handy in a New York January. The notes on each place say so when the source mentions it.

Places with a dog menu

Avoca, Barking Dog Upper East Side, Judy Z's, Leland Eating & Drinking House, LouLou, The Wilson, Veselka, and Shake Shack Madison Square Park have food or treats just for dogs. Several guides mention the dog menu at The Wilson in Chelsea, frozen treats included.

Dogs inside

Inside, most places that serve food keep dogs out, apart from service animals. Where a source says dogs can come inside, it is mostly a bar or a brewery: Luckydog, Beckett's, Black Door, Bushwick Country Club, d.b.a. East Village, Lobby Bar at The Ludlow, Mission Dolores, Other Half Brewing, The Whitby Bar, American Trash, Grimm Artisanal Ales, Strong Rope Brewery Gowanus, and Wild East Brewing.
