Dogs on the patio, and the rules behind it

Since 2019, Texas law has let restaurants welcome dogs in outdoor dining areas. The restaurant must post a sign saying dogs are welcome, and you reach the patio from outside without going through the building. Your dog stays on a leash and off the chairs and tables, and no food is prepared on the patio (Texas Health and Safety Code § 437.025). Each place decides for itself, so if it matters, call ahead.

Austin summers are hot. Pick a shaded patio, go in the morning or evening, and bring water, and keep your dog off hot pavement in the afternoon.

Beer gardens and food truck parks

Austin's beer gardens and food truck parks are some of the easiest places to bring a dog. Banger's on Rainey Street has a big outdoor area, a small dog park and a sausage made for dogs, and The Picnic on Barton Springs Road gathers several food trucks in one spot near Zilker Park.

Dog bars

A few places combine a bar or café with an off-leash yard, such as BARk House Social, The Watering Bowl and Neighbors. Dogs play while you eat and drink, and you pay for a day pass or membership and show your dog's vaccination records. The note on each place says what the source mentions.

Places with a dog menu

BARk House Social, Amy's Ice Creams South Congress, Angel's Ice House, Austin Terrier, Banger's Sausage House & Beer Garden, Blue Lacy, Hanami AYCE Sushi, Lazarus Brewing Co. Airport Blvd, The Watering Bowl, and Upstairs at Caroline serve food or treats made for dogs.

Dogs inside

Inside, places that serve food keep dogs out, apart from service animals. Where a source says dogs can come inside, it is a taproom, a saloon or a dog bar: BARk House Social, Blue Owl Brewing, Hi Sign Brewing, Hopsquad Brewing Co., Meanwhile Brewing Co., Moontower Saloon, Nomadic Beerworks, and Dog House Drinkery & Dog Park.

Hill Country breweries

West of the city, breweries such as Jester King near Dripping Springs have big outdoor grounds where leashed dogs are welcome. On Lake Travis, the brewery above The Oasis welcomes pets on its decks; the restaurant below does not.
