More about Heinold's First and Last Chance Saloon
Johnny Heinold bought the former oyster workers' bunkhouse for $100 and turned it into a pub. The name comes from sailors taking their first or last drink here before or after long voyages, and from the nearby Alameda ferry, since Alameda was dry. Heinold lent London money for UC Berkeley, and London mentions the bar 17 times in John Barleycorn.
A corner clock is stopped at 5:18, the moment of the 1906 quake, and the bar is the last business in California still lit by its original gas lamps. It became an Oakland landmark in 1975 and a National Literary Landmark in 1998, and joined the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
