Dog-friendly coffee shops, neighborhood by neighborhood

Coffee, pastries and dogs, area by area

We only list a café when a guide or the café itself says dogs are welcome. Plenty of San Francisco coffee shops have a bench out front without saying anything about dogs, so they are not on the list. If you know one that should be here, tell us with a link.

Can dogs sit inside a café in San Francisco?

Usually not. California law lets a food business welcome dogs in its outdoor dining area if the owner chooses to. The dog must be on a leash or in a carrier, stay off chairs and benches, and reach the patio without walking through the indoor part of the café (California Health and Safety Code § 114259.5, Animal Legal & Historical Center). Service animals are covered by other rules. None of the cafés on our list has a source saying dogs can sit inside, so plan on a table outside.
