The Cheese Board began in 1967 as a small cheese shop opened by Elizabeth Magarian Valoma and Sahag Avedisian on Vine Street. In 1971 the owners split the business equally with their six employees, and it has been a collective ever since. Pizza started as a sideline in 1985, and the separate pizzeria later moved into the former Pig-by-the-Tail Charcuterie space.
The pizzeria is its own collective, owned by its members, who all have an equal vote. Together with Peet's Coffee, the Cheese Board helped shape the Gourmet Ghetto, and in 2003 it published a cookbook, The Cheese Board: Collective Works.
