Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan, who met in a homebrewing club, started Almanac in 2010 with small batches made from local farm produce, and the brand later shifted its focus to oak-aged beer. After a first taproom in San Francisco's Mission District, the company opened its 30,000-square-foot production brewery and this taproom in a former Navy hangar in February 2018.

In September 2021 it added The Backyard, an outdoor space on a former 8,400-square-foot grass lot with a 1967 Airstream bar and shade structures, plus The Lounge, a 21-and-over indoor room with 25-foot ceilings and big sliding doors to the beer garden.
