The brewery began in 2009 as Linden Street Brewery in West Oakland, billed as the city's first community-based production brewery since Golden West closed in the 1950s. After the Linden Street building was sold, owner John Karnay rebranded it as Oakland United Beerworks in 2017 and moved to the current site. Brewmaster Shane Aldrich had brewed at Lagunitas, Moylan's and Marin Brewing. The taproom seats about 70 inside, with a semi-private mezzanine, a kitchen and covered outdoor seating.
