Catherine Ghio started the business with her sons Tod and Anthony and son-in-law Roy Weber, and it grew into what the family calls San Diego's first full seafood restaurant. At one point there were ten Anthony's locations; La Mesa is the one that remains, now run by Craig Ghio. In 2020 the family planned to close, but a rush of customers kept it going. The dining room has a mosaic commissioned by Ghio's grandmother in 1958.
