Dogs on the patio, and the rules behind it

Since 2015, California law has let restaurants welcome dogs in their outdoor dining areas, if the owner chooses to. Your dog has to be on a leash or in a carrier, stay off the chairs and benches, and reach the patio without walking through the restaurant (AB 1965). Each place decides for itself, so if it matters, call ahead.

Breweries and taprooms

Many of San Diego's brewery tasting rooms welcome leashed dogs, usually on the patio or in a beer garden. Our list has 73 breweries, taprooms, bars and beer gardens, including Carlsbad Brewing Company, Harbor & Sky, Mavericks Beach Club, Monkey Bar (Town and Country), Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, Nautilus Tavern and more. Where a source says dogs can come inside, it is a taproom or a cidery: Culture Brewing Co. – Solana Beach, Poochie's Hooch Urban Cidery, Societe Brewing Company, Culver Beer Co., and Little Bird Brewing.

Places with a dog menu

Anthony's Fish Grotto La Mesa, Barbarella Restaurant & Bar, Barrio Eat Mexican, Bluewater Boathouse Seafood Grill, Carlsbad Brewing Company, Claire's on Cedros, Cody's La Jolla, Covewood Restaurant, Encontro North Park, Harbor & Sky, isa.bella Artisan Pizzeria & Craft Beer Garden, Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar (Mission Valley), Maggie's Café Barrio Logan, Mavericks Beach Club, Monkey Bar (Town and Country), Piazza 1909, Sally's Fish House & Bar, Shorehouse Kitchen – La Jolla, Slater's 50/50 Liberty Station, Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens – Liberty Station, Tamarindo Del Mar, The Rabbit Hole, The Shores Restaurant, Union Kitchen & Tap – Encinitas, Working Class, Nautilus Tavern, Shorehouse Kitchen – Carlsbad, and The Waverly serve food or treats made for dogs.

Beach towns

Coronado, La Jolla, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach and the North County towns from Del Mar to Oceanside have many patios close to the sand. Dogs are not allowed on most San Diego city beaches from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., so a beach-town lunch with a dog usually means a patio rather than a picnic on the sand. See dog beaches and off-leash areas for where dogs can run.
