Skip Virgilio and Ted Newcomb started AleSmith on Cabot Drive, and Zien took over in July 2002. In 2015 the brewery moved to a much larger site on AleSmith Court, and the original facility became Mikkeller San Diego. The tasting room has about 60 taps, a zig-zag bar with copper tap towers, a view of the two-story brewhouse, and a 5,000-square-foot outdoor garden with a fire pit and food vendors.

The lineup also includes Nut Brown Ale, Horny Devil and Wee Heavy. AleSmith has won ten World Beer Cup medals, six of them gold, and was named Small Brewing Company Brewer of the Year at the 2008 Great American Beer Festival.
