The Boathouse was built a year before the Hotel del Coronado opened and stored boats for its guests. Scripps used the second floor for research from 1903 to 1905, and two yacht clubs were based there before Chart House turned it into a restaurant in 1968, moving it onto a new platform closer to shore. A renovation in 2014 and 2015 replaced the weakened kitchen floor and uncovered much of the original structure.
Bluewater was founded in 1996 by Jimmy Ulcickas and Rick Staunton and runs its own swordfish boat, the Pilikia, out of San Diego, which supplies harpooned swordfish in season.
