Burning Beard Brewing Company

East County brewery in a converted El Cajon warehouse, opened on Leap Day 2016 by Mike Maass and Jeff Wiederkehr. The range runs from IPAs and a Czech-style pilsner to an ESB, a roggenbier and coolship-fermented wild ales, served in a taproom with a punk-rock streak.

More about Burning Beard Brewing Company

Both founders grew up in the area; Wiederkehr is also a rock musician and English professor. The taproom has furniture made from century-old gold-mine pumps from Julian and a jukebox of classic rock, punk and '90s alternative.

Out back, a copper-lined coolship sits in a cedar shed beside about 100 oak barrels and several foeders for the wild ales. The tasting board sorts beers into categories named Postmodern, Medieval, Gothic and Transcendental, without descriptions. Craft Beer & Brewing profiled it as a Breakout Brewer in 2021.
