Allison spent 12 years at the bakery of Milton's Delicatessen and developed the recipe for Milton's Multigrain bread before opening Claire's with Boley. Their rebuilt building, designed by Jean-Louis Coquereau, was the first restaurant in San Diego to earn platinum green-building certification, reported by NBC San Diego in 2010.

Salvaged beams, denim insulation and bricks from the demolition for Petco Park went into the cafe, and citrus, guavas, hops, grapes and herbs grow on the grounds.
