Doug Constantiner, a former finance executive, started Societe with his friend Travis Smith, who left the company in 2019. Before brewing on his own, Constantiner worked at Pizza Port Carlsbad, Green Flash, Oggi's and The Bruery. The Pupil grew to about half of the brewery's output, and the core lineup, including The Coachman session IPA and the hazy Bulbous Flowers, went into six-packs sold across California. A second taproom opened in Old Town in 2022, the same year the brewery was named Small Business of the Year for its state Assembly district.
