The building went up in 1909 as a saltwater pumping station for the Oakland Fire Department, and two wings were added in 1913 to make it a municipal boathouse. It reopened as Lake Chalet after a five-year public-private reconstruction, timed to its 100th birthday. Inside there are about 10,000 square feet of dining space and an 80-foot bar overlooking the water; the glassed-in Lake Room juts out over the lake. Beach Chalet ales pour alongside cocktails, and the dock runs weekly specials such as Taco Tuesday and Crab Friday.
